IT Departments 'to blame' for office move chaos.
A new survey today questioned the success of IT departments in providing network solutions to match the needs of the modern office. The survey, commissioned by consultants IT Lab, found that three quarters of office workers polled routinely moved desks at least once in a twelve month period.
Current work patterns, however, are not matched by technical flexibility, with two thirds of respondents suffering difficulties following relocation. Delays resulting from IT problems are having a negative influence upon productivity, working hours and ultimately, profits.
Over 600 office managers across a range of industries were polled to reveal common complaints. The survey revealed that whilst the clear majority were required to move desks and equipment regularly, over sixty per cent encountered computer and telephone problems having done so. Connectivity problems – inability to access e-mail or the internet – proved the leading cause of computer difficulty. Internal IT departments are repeatedly blamed as the cause for disruption.
Seeking to remain anonymous, one manager opined "The IT department knows when and where we will be moving people and desks around. Yet they seem unable to ensure that when workers return following a move they can begin work immediately. There always seems to be problems. It can take days, often weeks, before networks are once again fully functioning and the company can get back to normal. Why can't they plan ahead and therefore make sure that the transition is glitch-free?"
IT Lab commissioned the survey to determine the extent of the problem following feedback from new clients who detailed problems encountered during office moves.
Director Gary Thompson believes he has the answer. He says, "It's a simple lack of resources. The majority of IT departments cannot cope with suddenly having to rebuild networks and set up individual workstations with limited manpower. IT Lab works with many companies to ensure office moves are glitch free but we still come across IT departments that are trying and failing to do it alone. You can understand the frustration of Office Managers. Imagine coming in on a Monday morning to find workers milling around unable to use the phone or their computers. You might as well send them home!"
